In Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival, Gurnemanz is the experienced mentor who helps the young Parzival grow in knowledge and responsibility. His teaching includes compassion, restraint and attention to the consequences of one’s actions.
The name is used here as a reminder that historical work requires more than ceremony or correct manners. It asks us to establish what people gave to society, how they were treated in their own time and afterwards, and which questions have too long gone unasked.
The initiative’s first focus is the violinist Lady Hallé, whose grave in Berlin has been identified and taken into long-term care. Related remembrance work includes the effort to restore public recognition of Sir Edgar Speyer.
